The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a Methodist Christian denomination that is both mainline Protestant and Evangelical. Founded in 1968 by the union of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church, the UMC traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley within the Church of England.

umc logoThe cross and flame is the symbol used by the United Methodist Church as its logo.  It was adopted shortly after the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church.  It relates the United Methodist Church to God through Christ (the cross) and the Holy Spirit (the flame).  The flame is a reminder of Pentecost when witnesses were unified by the power of the Holy Spirit and saw "tongues, as of fire" (Acts 2:3) appearing over each of the followers of Jesus Christ .  The two tongues of a single flame may also be understood to represent the union of the two denominations.  The two separate flames represent the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist coming together and forming the United Methodist Church.
